What is HVO or HVO100?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel can also be referred to as HVO100, HVO renewable diesel or HVO fuel. The abbreviation HVO stands for "Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil". This type of diesel is, in addition to the vegetable oils, made from waste, residual oils and fats, such as used cooking oil.
HVO diesel comes in all kinds of blends. It can be used both pure (100% concentration) and mixed in any ratio with, for example, fossil diesel. For example, HVO20 consists of 20% HVO and 80% fossil diesel. Neste MY Renewable Diesel is an HVO100 product, which means HVO in its purest form. And it complies with the EN15940 specification for paraffinic diesel, ensuring the quality of the diesel.
How is HVO100 or HVO diesel produced?
In the 1990s, Neste's research department developed the NEXBTL refining technology. With this technology, Neste is able to produce high-quality renewable products from 100% renewable raw materials. During NEXBTL production, hydrogen is used in the chemical process to remove oxygen from the fatty acids that make up the fuel's completely renewable feedstock base. The result is an HVO100, which has a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel. Therefore, Neste MY Renewable Diesel (HVO) can be easily used without the need to modify engines. What are the advantages of HVO100 diesel?
With Neste MY Renewable Diesel (HVO100), greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 90%* over the fuel's total life cycle compared to fossil diesel.
